The LifeguardBy Mary Morris

It was with her stories that Mary Morris first won attention and acclaim: her first collection, Vanishing Animals, received the prestigious Rome Prize, and her second, The Bus of Dreams, was widely hailed. In this new collection, Mary Morris once again shows her great sensitivity to men and women at moments of turbulence, uncertainty and crisis in their lives-and how they can reach for the unexpected and the spiritual at such times.

In the title story, a lifeguard sees his teenage mystique among the girls on the beach dissolve in a panicked moment when he cannot save a child. In "The Wall," a woman confronts her husband's first marriage, in the form of a mural on a kitchen wall that he is strangely unable to contemplate painting over. In "The Glass-Bottom Boat," a mother on her first trip abroad learns about trust through a solicitous stranger. In "The Snowmaker's Wife," a housewife left alone while her husband works long hours at a mountaintop ski resort starts to suspect his betrayal-as well as her own perceptions. In addition to these stories, which have appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine, Vogue, and other magazines, are two brand-new stories: "Vital Signs" tells of the consequences of a doctor bringing back to life a young woman, half-dead on the side of the road; and "Cross Word" is a wonderfully funny play on those puzzles and the people who do them.

Combining Mary Morris's consummate craft as a storyteller with her gift for dramatic travel writing, The Lifeguard is a powerful and haunting collection.

From School Library Journal
YA. These 10 short stories are stitched together with the common threads of personal crisis, change, and growth. All have straightforward plots and good character development. Three stories have particular appeal to YAs. In a first-person narrative, "The Lifeguard" describes sitting in his elevated chair, adored by all the young girls on the beach, and waiting for a crisis. When a toddler stops breathing, he tries everything he has been trained to do but nothing works. The child is saved by a divorcee whose constant presence on the beach has both disturbed and intrigued the lifeguard. He is compelled to seek out this older woman who wordlessly embraces him and then sends him on his way. Told in retrospect and filled with precise detail, the story leaves readers to ponder how this experience influences his life. The hero of "Slices of Life" is a young pizza entrepreneur who has caring relationships with his girlfriend and his customers but not his ne'er-do-well father. In "Souvenirs," a girl begins shoplifting as she struggles with growing up and the changes that it brings. Several selections feature married women dealing with husbands and children. Some have supernatural elements. The stories are uneven in quality, but all are succinct and enjoyable. Each one ends with thought-provoking unresolved issues that are perfect for YA group discussion.?Nancy Karst, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Library Journal
These stories by the author of House Arrest (LJ 4/1/96) offer a range of characters and circumstances, yet the tone and structure are always the same: a somewhat bewildered protagonist tries to deal with a situation, tension builds, actions and feelings are rationalized, and the story ends abruptly, with no satisfying denouement. Sometimes the tension is caused by supernatural forces, as in "The Wall," in which an indelible mural on a kitchen wall has a mystical effect on the narrator's husband. In other stories, the tension results from prosaic domestic drama. The most successful story, "The Glass-Bottom Boat," about a housewife on vacation with her family in Jamaica who encounters local residents with magical powers, melds the enigmatic and the commonplace. The uptight, contained lives of Morris's characters are mimicked by her compact, bland prose. For comprehensive modern fiction collections.?Reba Leiding, Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst., Troy, N.Y.

From Kirkus Reviews
Morris's third collection (Vanishing Animals, 1975; The Bus of Dreams, 1985) shows some of the flair for yarnspinning missed in her last novel, House Arrest (1996), but repetition lessens the overall impact of the ten tales here (nine previously published). Most of this volume's characters are poised on the cusp of a change, nowhere more so than in the title story, where a teenage lifeguard, accustomed to being the lord of all he surveys, has a rude awakening when he proves deficient in the first aid needed to save a toddler on the beach. But young male protagonists are an exception; much more common are married women (like Emily in ``The Snowmaker's Wife'') who learn something profound about the emptiness of their lives. Emily's husband spends his winter nights making snow at a ski resort, but when his nocturnal absences increase she begins to suspect something else; then her fear that he's stepping out with her best friend is verified at a time when she's most vulnerable. Melanie in ``Losing Track,'' Lenore in ``The Glass-Bottom Boat,'' and the unnamed cowboy's wife in ``Around the World'' all experience epiphanies when they go to the limit of what their husbands can do for them, then step beyond on their own: Melanie during an all-night vigil in Navaho land, Lenore on a Caribbean holiday when a native opens her eyes to a world she'd denied, and the cowgirl when the carnival comes along, bringing a handsome stranger to the laundromat. We don't learn what follows these personal revelations, but Morris's implication is that her characters' lives, if not completely transformed, will at least be easier to bear. Longing and change are better personified in some situations than others here, and the marital dynamic grows stale. But there are also exquisitely revealing moments, and clearly Morris hasn't lost her touch as a story writer. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The Disney Way provides a fantastic means for jump-starting any organizations customer service approach. This book provides the foundation for implementing a customer centric cultural transformation that will run deep within your organization, and that will provide for long-term changes. This is not simply about sprinkling a bit of magic on the outside and hoping that it holds. The Disney Way starts with buy-in from leadership, invites front-line employees to develop a foundation, and leaves employees with the fundamentals necessary to make positive customer oriented decisions. Bill and Lynn do a great job presenting Disney's key principles to success, and mixing in many examples from the companies they have worked with in a way that is easily digested and makes clear the reward of the long-term commitment needed for execution. This new edition is made better by the addition of government organizations. Having spoken with Ottawa County and seen their customer service first-hand in preparing our own organization, I can assure you the chapter is no exaggeration of how profound an impact the Disney Way can have. Thank you for another great book!

This book has some great tidbits but I found overall that the book sounded more like a sales pitch. I had many moments where they touched on something interesting but left off with a "if you want to know more, you should participate in the retreat!" Type passage.

I just got done reading, this book.I felt that it wasn't really great at all. Good maybe, OK maybe, but not great. Its mostly a few sparse pages of some Disney history and and anecdotal stuff (which i wanted to read a lot more of)And the rest are these droning accounts from other "successful" companies in a wide array of industries. supposedly shaping their style after Disney Co.Lots and lots of case studies and the one discussed in the most detail of them all is the "whirlpool no frost" team. Don't get me wrong its a great account that they use to tie into the book. using the whole DREAM, BELIEVE, DARE, DO. principles that Walt Disney pioneered so long ago. This along with several other examples of companies adopting these really great principles. My problem with it was that it got very boring as it slugged on and on about whirlpool more than any other company. The other thing i found disappointing was how it seemed after the first chapter that the book wasn't even about Disney anymore, but more about these other handful of companies that the authors decided they wanted to stroke ever so vigorously. It went on to espouse the virtues of Disney Co. and what a fantastic place to work, and grow your career, etc. If only more companies would take a page from Disney's book then the world would be a better place so on and so on.Like I said this is an average book not totally terrible , and its a worth while read i think if you could get through it in one sitting. Since i couldn't though, it got to be very preachy and boring to me.I am a huge fan of all things Disney and in my opinion may even be a little biased because I do believe in the principles discussed in the book, and generally used to love WDW. But having recently made a trip to the Magic Kingdom Several months ago. I have to tell you that I did not see any of those principles being practiced anywhere. And other than a boring book, that is what stands out to me the most - the actual REAL live customer experience. and it was a BAD one!In one of the last chapter of the book, they begin to vilify (as with any Disney story it seemed appropriate to have a villain.) Michael Eisner and how he was both the savior of the company but ultimately led to its degradation as well. And while all that is probably true, i still didn't see much of a difference in quality or service the last time i visited the park. I was actually quite disappointed. What does this have to do with this book though?Well i think ts all a bunch of hyped up baloney is what. Anybody can interview PR reps and read press releases, and copy and paste a companies corp. philosophy, bio and make a good story out of it. Anybody can interview CEO's and COO's and say "well we now we have a clear picture of this company and their culture their values." But it would be a lie.I was not impressed with the promotion job the authors performed while sounding the trumpet for all of these other companies and while it all sounds like they are leading the revolution to a shift in corporate culture, the truth is all this book did was paint a pretty picture of principles not practice. And anybody can sell that story, I on the other hand want to hear the REAL story. The REAL successes and The REAL failures, and the REAL state of things. This book did one thing very well. Like Disney is took us to a world of fantasy and wonder. As it showed us examples of a bunch of other people supposedly applying the Disney Way. No where in the book does it say however " we modeled this or that after Walt Disney, and Disney Co."It paints this nice picture of a world where companies put their employees and teams first, and a commitment, a real commitment to quality and ultimately the consumer first. The truth; however is less appealing, just as my recent unpleasant visit to Disney proved. In the REAL world, things aren't as nice as in the stories. So to wrap this up, as I stated earlier. Its not a Bad book at all. Its just not a Great book either. its O.K., It's mediocre at best. It's a cheap - thrown together fluff job with fancy trimmings and a shiny foil wrapping. like most things we buy now days. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!(I know no companies perfect, OK i get it.) However we as consumers and as a nation need to start demanding "Don't just Tell me, Don't just Sell me, instead Show me what your really about, Prove it!." Put your money where your mouth is and we'll see who's telling the truth. everything else is just hot-aired waste of time! Like This Book Was For Me.

I have to start by saying I am a sucker for business stories that are well written and capture the journey of a company...through good and bad. This book takes the Disney story to a new level by providing tangible learnings and practices that are shared in an easy to understand manner. In fact, I can say that this book has contributed to the success of our company by providing some real tools we implemented almost immediately. But don't take my word for it. Here is the real bones of why you need this book.1. Teach everyone to dream (yes everyone) and make them come true;2. Have passion and believe that you can achieve3. Customers pay the bills...never forget that4. Work as a unified team5. Share the recognition6. Perfect practice prevent poor performance7. Communicate the magic in an easy to understand mannerIf these simple yet effective principles resonate for you then buy the book. Read...re-read...and take notes. This book is not a how to guide but it really does provide enough information and context to enable you to...

Those four simple words are at the root of the Disney business philosophy, established by Walt himself and carried on by Michael Eisner. I found this book to be both entertaining and informative. The business principles outlined by Capodagli and Jackson seem like simple, common sense - but bear repeating numerous times until more businesses adopt them. Principles like encouraging innovation (and even failure, since you learn how *not* to do something) ... building on the strengths of your employees (development plans instead of demeaning performance appraisals) ... all will make any business work better. I found numerous ideas here that I will be applying in my workplace as well as to my personal life. This is a must-read for any manager who wants to motivate his or her team to really excel -- and for any employee who wants to be his or her personal best.

The Lost Daughter, by Elena Ferrante

From Publishers Weekly

The arresting third novel from pseudonymous Italian novelist Ferrante (Troubling Love) pursues a divorced, 47-year-old academic's deeply conflicted feelings about motherhood to their frightening core. While on vacation by herself on the Ionian coast, Leda feels contentedly disburdened of her two 20-something daughters, who have moved to their father's city of Toronto. She's soon engrossed in watching the daily drama of Nina, a young mother, with her young daughter, Elena (along with Elena's doll, Nani), at the seashore. Surrounded by proprietary Neapolitan relatives and absorbed in her daughter's care, Nina at first strikes Leda as the perfect mother, reminding herself of when she was a new and hopeful parent. Leda's eventual acquaintance with Nina yields a disturbing confession and sets in motion a series of events that threatens to wreck, or save, the integrity of Nina's family. Ferrante's prose is stunningly candid, direct and unforgettable. From simple elements, she builds a powerful tale of hope and regret. From The New Yorker

In this brutally frank novel of maternal ambivalence, the narrator, a forty-seven-year-old divorcée summering alone on the Ionian coast, becomes obsessed with a beautiful young mother who seems ill at ease with her husbandÂ’s rowdy, slightly menacing Neapolitan clan. When this womanÂ’s daughter loses her doll, the older woman commits a small crime that she canÂ’t explain even to herself. Although much of the drama takes place in her head, FerranteÂ’s gift for psychological horror renders it immediate and visceral, as when the narrator recalls the "animal opacity" with which she first longed for a child, before she was devoured by pregnancy.Copyright ©2008Click here to subscribe to The New Yorker

This is one really… weird…. book. Look, I am not going to lie to you. The writing is fantastic. The subject, a mother honest about motherhood, is one of my favorite topics. As I read the book I kept thinking that this is a really well written book and I can totally equate with what the character means about finally be free of her grown up daughters and then WHAMO, it takes this really weird turn. Once it took this turn, I was hooked. I laughed out loud. I stared at the words in fascination/horror. I could not put the darn thing down! Good thing It is a fairly short book. Holy Moley. You gotta read it to believe it. I understand that the text was originally written in Italian and then translated to English. If the English version is that witty, biting, and passionate, I wonder what the original Italian translation feels like? On to "The Days of Abandonment," I can't help myself.

i had not read any ferrante before, and was told that this was a good start. it is, on the surface, the kind of fiction that i enjoy -- a closely observed character study of a complex character. there is not much of a plot -- a woman with mixed feelings about many things takes a vacation trip to a beach, encounters a family there and observes them, a child's toy is lost, things end with much unresolved. that is not usually a problem for me, as long as the character whose inner life is being presented is an interesting and nuanced one.however, this novel annoyed me the entire time i was reading it. a lack of tidy plot is one thing, but ferrante's writing is almost incoherently vague at times, with switches in mood and feeling that seem almost arbitrary. and the language is frustrating to read -- clumsy sentences with odd wording and repetition. indeed, i began to wonder if it was in part a terrible translation, but the translator appears to have translated a bunch of fiction previously, including a number of ferrante's works. so. having no reason to blame the translation, i find myself not thinking very highly of ferrante's writing, and not likely to read anything else by her.

Motherhood, a shattering. "All the hopes of youth seemed to have been destroyed, I seemed to be falling backward toward my mother, my grandmother, the chain of mute or angry women I came from." The things mothers cannot bear to admit or say out loud. Many of the same themes as the My Brilliant Friend series, I felt having read the the Neapolitan series it took me deeper into Ferrante's world and agenda. Two women, similar names -- Elena Lina Nina Lenu, Gino, Nino -- a child with a doll, the doll gets taken, a large family group, one woman is lean and lovely and has a child very young and is detached somewhat from the family, has a lover. The other abandoned her children to pursue a career. The doll is a significant symbol. This is experimental fiction, it deals with the psychological light and dark of a woman struggling with identity and her choices. The macabre and horror-element is the dark side of what women hardly ever write about, let alone admit. A journey into a mother's psyche, Ferrante writes honestly about motherhood, identity and the difficult choices women face.

Leda is a 47 year-old divorced woman, and mother to daughters, Bianca and Marta, now 22 and 24. The girls have recently moved from Italy to Toronto, Canada to live with their father. Leda is well educated and teaches at the university in Florence, Italy. Leda was not upset when her daughters moved away, in fact it was quite the opposite: "When my daughters moved to Toronto, where their father had lived and worked for years, I was embarrassed and amazed to discover that I wasn't upset; rather, I felt light, as if only then had I definitively brought them into the world. For the first time in almost twenty-five years I was not aware of the anxiety of having to take care of them. The house was neat, as if no one lived there, I no longer had the constant bother of shopping and doing the laundry, the woman who for years had helped with the household chores found a better paying job, and I felt no need to replace her."It's summer and since she is feeling happy about her new freedom, Leda decides to rent a beach house for six weeks, on the Ionian coast, near Naples. She packs her books and lesson plans for the coming school year and is planning to relax by lounging on the beach by day.Early on she becomes fascinated by the interactions of an attractive young mother named Nina, and her young daughter, Elena. She also intently watches little Elena's interactions with her doll, which the girl calls by several different names. Several other family members visit the family on the beach as well. One day Leda notices the child by the waters edge, so she returns her to her mother who was lying on the beach blanket and hadn't noticed the child had wandered to the water. Another day when the family leaves the beach for the day, Leda notices that Elena's beloved doll was left buried in the sand. This incident upsets Leda, and suddenly this event, along with the interactions of mother and child, opens a floodgate of memories for Leda of her own days as a young mother. Some of the incidents which she recalls of things she did, and ways she reacted to her own daughters --were cringe-worthy.This brief novella, just 124 pages, is sure to evoke emotions among readers, especially mothers. Narrated in the first person, this deep journey into a mother's psyche, gives the reader plenty to think about. Marriage, motherhood, personal freedom, sacrifice and career fulfillment are some of the conflicting issues that surface in this work.Initially, I thought I might have a problem with the flow of the story due to the translation, but that was not the case. Once I got into the rhythm and into what was going on in Leda's head, I was hooked. I liked this one a lot, and would definitely recommend it.

This is a complex piece of literature by a highly acclaimed Italian author, who was new to me. It was the first of her novels that I read. I have now read three of them. She writes incredibly well, and delves in great and realistic detail into the thoughts and feelings of her characters, who definitely live on the page. I was so perplexed the symbolism of the doll, and what it actually means that I started a virtual book club with some of my literary friends to discuss this work as our first, so that I can hear and discuss what others thought about the depth of meaning and symbolism of various components. A wonderfully deep piece of literature; definitely not a "popcorn read", as I like to say. Food for great thought. I liked it.
